David A. Grout

David was born into a musical family in the city of Ithaca, New York.  His mother, an amateur pianist, and his father, an upright bass player and gifted singer, gave him his first musical instrument at the age of 5 - a toy drum set.  After a few weeks, the drum heads were broken, and David switched to real instruments.  He took piano lessons and played trombone in the school orchestra until age 12, at which point he became obsessed with drums and guitar.  Inspired by the odd time signatures of progressive rock, he is also an unapologetic fan of pop music, and loves both traditional and modern jazz. David played in rock and jazz bands throughout his teen years, and also studied and performed classical and fingerstyle guitar.  One of his most memorable experiences was at age 14, when he was chosen to be the drummer for a school production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar.”  Six years later he played the guitar part in “Evita.”

Primarily a self-taught drummer, David has had a handful of lessons from artists including jazz master Tommy Campbell and Brazilian virtuoso drummer Duduka da Fonseca.  He considers his most important teachers to be the hundreds of songs and recordings he has studied over the years, as well as the thousands of songs he listened to as a child on the Sunday radio program “The Weekly Top 40.”  As significant influences he names Chick Corea, Yes, Rush, Kiss, Steely Dan, Parliament/Funkadelic, The Grateful Dead, Phish, The Police, Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa, and John Scofield, among many others.

After studying Russian history and literature in college, David moved to Moscow in 1990.  He has played with a wide range of Russian and international artists, including Irina Bogushevskaya, Alexey Kozlov and Arsenal, Leonid and Nikolai Vintskevich, the Che Guevara Band, Che Guevara Jazz, Dr. Nick, Vision of Sound, Sasha Sklyar, Valeriy Kovtun, Igor Boiko, and Crossroadz.  He has jammed onstage with Scott Henderson, Igor Butman, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Mikhail and Yakov Okun.

David and Abelardo met while working on Irina Bogushevskaya’s album “Nezhniye Veshi.’” Playing with the Lopez Brothers in the Che Guevara Band was a fresh and challenging musical adventure, a much deeper experience with Latin American music than he had ever had before.  When Alexander and Abelardo invited him to be part of a new group, the Che Guevara Jazz trio, it was a dream come true for all three musicians.  In 2010, David played on the group’s debut recording, “Caminos y Emociones,” and contributed the original composition “Tres Hermanos.”

Lately David has been playing more guitar than drums; most recently he has been performing with The Likes, an acoustic group featuring funky rhythms and close vocal harmonies.
